Career Opportunities in Microbiology

Microbiologists are biological scientists who study organisms so small that, generally, they can only be seen with a microscope. Microbiology is a branch of biology that includes the study of growth, characteristics and various other aspects related to the life cycle of microbes such as protozoan, algae, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Apart from examining the specimens, microbiologists also explore the relationship of micro organisms with other creatures and their consequence on the life of human beings. They also study how microorganisms develop and reproduce as well as their distribution in nature. Microbiologists play a significant role in the society, as they are the people who conduct research on the positive as well as negative effects of microorganisms on humanity.
Micro organisms are almost found everywhere and they constitute by far the largest group of living things existing on earth. Our existence, health, food, agriculture and even industrial development are very much dependent on them. If microbes were to become extinct, disaster would become inevitable and would be beyond imagination. Unknowingly, man has made use of micro organism since prehistoric times, mostly in the production of food and drinks, such as leavening of bread, souring of milk and making of wine and beer etc. However, it was only in the seventeenth century that the microbial world was discovered.
Many microbiologists work for universities, where they teach and do research. Others work at medical centers or in private industry. Some work for government agencies. Although their jobs have different aspects and responsibilities, most microbiologists do some research or laboratory work. They use special equipment to study microorganisms including light microscopes, electron microscopes, centrifuges, glass tubes, slides, and computers. They are often assisted by biological technicians.
Courses and Eligibility :
Due to the advancement in the field of science and technology, the scope of research in the field of microbiology has widened. As a result, people who have studied science as the main subject in 10+2 or graduation can go for build their career in the field of microbiology. Career in microbiology can be a lucrative option in India as well as abroad. Numerous institutions all over India offer degree programs at under graduate as well as at post graduate levels in the field of microbiology. Minimum requirement to seek admission to under graduate programs is 10+2 in science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or biology), while for post graduate programs, the candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in microbiology / Life science. Microbiologists study and investigate micro organisms and their relationships with man, animals and plants. Some of the sub categories of microbiologists are as follows Medical Microbiologists, Agricultural Microbiologists, Industrial Microbiologists, Marine Microbiologists and General Microbiologists.
Career Prospects :
Microbiologists find jobs in many places like research and development laboratories of government and private hospitals, research organisations, pharmaceutical, food, beverage and chemical industries. Being closely related to biotechnology, there are many similarities between them, making microbiology also a very promising career option. A steep rise in employment avenues for microbiologists is envisaged as a result of growing numbers of above mentioned organisations.
Remuneration :
The remuneration of microbiologists depends on the area of specialization chosen by them. A beginner can earn between Rs.15,000/- to Rs.20,000/- per month. With experience and qualification, one can expect a higher remuneration.
